The Epomeo

It is the highest mountain of the island. Whoever arrives on the island is struck by this very high mountain which is noticeable at the centre of the island, visible from the sea.

It is the Epomeo. It was once believed that the Epomeo is a volcano. Actually, that is not the case, but it is still one of the most beautiful areas to visit for a day in a natural environment. Many itineraries are available to reach the Epomeo. The more traditional is the one that starts at Fontana. The first section of the road is paved and can be travelled by car, up to about 500 meters. Then, in order to arrive to the top - about 300 more meters - it is necessary to take a path that is an old mule trail. You walk in the shade for a long stretch, and then you arrive at a sunny rocky area open on the landscape.

This is an old lava flow which has solidified, and a narrow trail has been carved out of it. The view at the peak of the Epomeo is exceptional: Looking right and left, you can see the entire island. On the top of the Epomeo there is an old restaurant, a beautiful little church dedicated to Saint Nicola, and an ancient hermitage of friars. The walk can continue using the path that descends toward the west, among fields cultivated with potatoes and fruit trees, and you will be always surrounded by one of the world's most beautiful views.
